Empowering the Next Generation Through Play
“Neither snow nor rain nor heat …” isn’t just the U.S. Post Office creed anymore; it’s also the unofficial new motto of the 111 Cox volunteers who showed up in the cold and rain to build a playground for the children of Dresden Elementary School in Chamblee, Ga. on Friday, Oct. 26.
Employees from Cox Enterprises, Cox Communications and Cox Automotive partnered with KaBOOM! to build a playground and outdoor learning space, while Cox Media Group radio station KISS 104.1 provided tunes to keep the energy up. President and CEO Alex Taylor was also onsite to get the volunteers motivated.
In just five hours, the volunteers mixed 9,920 pounds of concrete, moved 108 cubic yards of mulch and built a playground, outdoor classroom, stage, butcher block benches and double shade structure.
According to Dresden principal Jesse Berger, the new play spaces “will be a tremendous asset to this school, providing another opportunity for extracurricular activities, and an outdoor learning space to enhance classroom instruction.”
KaBOOM! is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids, particularly those growing up in poverty in America. This playground was Cox’s fourth KaBOOM! build. Between the four projects, these play spaces serve over 2,600 children annually.
