HQ Buildings Achieve Zero Waste to Landfill

11/08/2019

Zero Waste to Landfill by 2024. That’s been Cox's goal for several years and now we’re one step closer. Cox Conserves, our national sustainability program, is happy to announce that Central Park buildings A and B have received a zero waste to landfill designation.

What Does This Mean?
These buildings have achieved a 90% waste diversion rate (which is the amount of waste diverted from the landfill due to recycling, composting and other means) and now dramatically limit the impact they’re making on the environment. This has been a long journey and is the result of us coming together and making the necessary changes to lower our collective impact.

Things like encouraging employees to opt out of to-go containers in the Dining Center, removing disposable cups from the break rooms, adding composting receptacles on each floor — as well as equipment upgrades and capital projects — have all contributed to us reaching this important milestone.

How We Did It
Adopting these changes and others directly impacted our waste-reduction efforts. Some of the other ways we reached this goal include:

Partnering with Cox Enterprises Corporate Services and vendors to find eco-friendly ways of providing their services — like purchasing green materials/housekeeping supplies — while enhancing staff education and training.

Installing directional signage and separate waste collection containers for landfill, recycling and composting.

Partnering with different departments to continue with Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) policies and procedures (ex: Follow-You-Printing and default duplex printing settings, Employee onboarding education).

Adding recycling provisions for nontraditional waste collection such as ink and toner cartridges, electronic waste recycling (PC Depot) and secure document shredding.

Thank You
Thank you to everyone — from our executive leaders to our everyday green champions — for joining our zero waste to landfill journey and helping us embed environmental stewardship into the Cox culture.
