For Cox Automotive team member Andrea Jara, Mother Nature is her playground — and her passion. Andrea, an administrative operations manager at Xtime in Silicon Valley, California, played an integral leadership role in making Xtime the first Cox Auto location to achieve the company goal of Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) — eight years ahead of the 2024 deadline.
In 2016 Andrea set a goal to achieve ZWTL by the end of that year. She proposed centralized waste stations, which meant removing personal trash and recycle bins from work stations. Within six months of this “kick the can” initiative, Xtime became the first U.S. Cox Automotive brand to achieve ZWTL, which they have maintained for over two years.
Andrea’s passion for creating a better, greener future and a cleaner environment for the next generation is just part of her lifestyle. She and her husband achieved ZWTL in their home, and grow 80 percent of the produce they eat using rich soil created from composting their food scraps.
A self-proclaimed “Girl Scout at heart,” Andrea continues to bring awareness and education to others. “I don’t pass up an opportunity to provide green tips — even to strangers — about conserving energy or water or helping someone figure out what items go into what bin — at work, at home or out in public,” she said.
Andrea is also focused on cleaning up the beach and oceans. “I love the beach and get sad to see so much trash washing up on the shore. I set a personal goal this year: Any time I visit a beach, I bring a bag to pick up trash. So far, 10 beach visits, three sunrises, seven sunsets and about 50 pounds of trash collected!”
The principles of sustainability are part of who Andrea Jara is, and “working for a company that has a core value around sustainability really took my passion to a whole new ballgame. I'm still learning!”
