The James M. Cox Foundation and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Help Protect Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp

06/26/2025

ATLANTA, June 26, 2025 — Thanks to a grant from the James M. Cox Foundation and some of the country’s other leading private philanthropies, The Conservation Fund is purchasing property near the Okefenokee Swamp from Twin Pines Minerals, halting a proposed mining project that could have irreparably damaged North America's largest blackwater swamp.

The victory comes after six years of persistent reporting led by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. AJC journalists helped maintain public awareness and legislative focus on protecting the swamp's wildlife and ensuring future generations can experience its unique ecosystem.

Jim Kennedy, chairman of the James M. Cox Foundation and chairman emeritus of Cox Enterprises, the parent company of the AJC, called the Okefenokee "a Georgia and national treasure that must be protected. It is extremely important that we work together to preserve natural habitats throughout our state and country."
