A Commitment to Digital Media

A Commitment to Digital Media

Cox began as a media company when founder James M. Cox purchased the Dayton Evening News (later the Dayton Daily News) in 1898. Since that time, Cox became a leader in the media industry by expanding from newspapers to radio to broadcast television. While Cox sold the majority of its Cox Media Group in 2019, the Cox family continues to believe the media plays a critical role in delivering accurate information and accountability necessary to maintain a well-functioning democracy.

Our recent acquisition of Axios builds on our company’s legacy in local media and underscores our company’s commitment to growing and nurturing credible, fact-based journalism. And Cox remains dedicated to investing in the future of our media companies — The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Dayton Daily News and other Ohio news outlets – as they continue to provide their communities with timely, accurate information and news.

Beyond journalism, Cox is finding opportunities for future growth through investments in rapidly expanding industries like esports. By 2030, the global esports market is forecasted to grow to $5.7 billion, up from $1.2 billion in 2021.

Axios

Axios is a news and technology company that covers topics and trends with an audience-first approach, delivering content through newsletters, a news stream, a mobile app and podcasts. Axios launched in 2017 based on the belief that the world needs smarter, more efficient coverage of topics shaping our fast-paced and changing world. Cox Enterprises acquired Axios in 2022.

Atlanta Esports Ventures

In 2018, Cox Enterprises invested in a partnership to form Atlanta Esports Ventures, which owns and operates the Atlanta Reign, a team in the Overwatch League and Atlanta FaZe, a team in the Call of Duty League. Both Overwatch League and Call of Duty League have global reach, with city-based teams located across Asia, Europe and North America. The Atlanta FaZe won the first-ever Call of Duty Championship in 2021, and that same year, Cox made an additional investment in FaZe Clan, the leading digital lifestyle and media platform rooted in gaming and youth culture.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The mission of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is to press on, to investigate and report what’s really going on in the Atlanta community. Every day, they work to do something remarkable: inform and empower readers with real, rigorous, in-depth journalism. By providing this fundamental public service, they ultimately help build a better metro Atlanta and Georgia for this generation and the next.
