INNOVATING TO GROW THE GOOD

At Cox, we believe in the power and potential that comes with building strong bonds between people while – at the same time – imagining bold new technologies that allow us to be a force for good in the world. It’s that spirit of always-on innovation and optimism that has allowed us to keep growing and evolving over the past 120+ years.

From our core businesses in automotive and communications, to our new ventures and support of the startup community, we know great things don’t come from comfort zones. And we’re now stepping up and out to tackle a whole new wave of challenges in pursuit of a brighter future for our people, communities and the planet we all call home.

INNOVATION SPOTLIGHTS

Nexus Fuels, a Cox Cleantech portfolio company, is on a mission to solve the global plastics problem.

Through its proprietary technology, waste plastics formerly bound for landfills and oceans, are converted back into their original molecular components so they can be used to create new materials. This ecofriendly recycling process can also convert waste plastics into virgin plastic precursors and resins that partners, like Shell and Chevron Phillips, are using to develop entirely new products.

No other known technology does this at scale with better efficiency and quality. Current operations are processing up to 50 metric tons of plastic per day, a volume that will expand dramatically in the years to come.

The Accessible Web Remote, developed by Cox Communications in partnership with Team Gleason, empowers people with disabilities to control their TV with their eyes. This free, web-based remote control is navigable using various assistive technologies, including eye gaze hardware and software, switch controls, and sip-and-puff systems, which the user controls by gently blowing into a tube.

“Innovative technology like this gives people with disabilities an added level of independence,” said Steve Gleason, founder of Team Gleason and former New Orleans Saints football player who has been living with ALS since 2011. Cox is partnering with organizations like Team Gleason to develop technologies focused on furthering disability inclusion to ensure all customers have the same level of accessibility.

Trapollo, a Cox Communications company, believes connected health isn’t just about numbers, facilities and technology, but about care and compassion. It’s all about people. Their remote monitoring solutions, end-to-end services and operational support give clinical teams more insights — so providers can be more focused on delivering better patient care.

Trapollo technology is expanding and improving healthcare for people across the country through condition-specific, connected medical devices delivered directly to patients’ homes.

For James Martin, Product Strategy Manager at Cox Automotive, progress and innovation are born out of curiosity. As part of Cox Automotive’s New Product Innovation team, he’s at the forefront of crafting new technologies for shared mobility and products that will create a smarter, safer automotive future.

One of his passion projects right now is an undercarriage device that captures high-quality still image frames of a vehicle’s undercarriage. By simply driving the car over the device, it stitches frames together to create a full CAD (computer aided design) model for inspection – allowing technicians to more thoroughly and systematically check vehicles for damage.

“We want auto techs and end consumers to be as safe as possible.” The risk of occupational injury among technicians has historically been very high. This device provides a wealth of insights and imagery, so technicians can have detailed information without physically getting under the car and drivers can have peace of mind.”

GROWING INNOVATIVE START-UPS

Inequity and racism have no place in our company or our world. At Cox, we believe equal rights are the foundation for a free and just society. We believe in human rights, justice and empowering our communities monetarily, but also uplifting people through kindness and compassion. In 2020, Cox announced the establishment of a $1 million fund to help organizations that support social justice and civil and human rights, and recently committed an additional $1 million to continue this effort in 2021.

The Cox Enterprises Social Impact Accelerator Powered by Techstars features founders whose companies are tackling pressing issues around social justice and systemic racism, including improving voter access and rights, criminal justice accountability and reform, corporate inclusion, healthcare quality and access, education quality and access and economic empowerment. Learn more about our Techstars partnerships.

Enduring prosperity and equity require access to overcome obstacles. Cox is committed to expanding opportunities in areas where we can have the most impact. Narrowing the digital divide is one such area. Cox Communications’ community program, Connect2Compete, provides low-cost, high-speed internet service to families with K-12 students who receive free or reduced-cost school lunch. Since its inception, the program has provided more than 60,000 families with reliable connectivity along with support services and flexible payment options to improve access to technology at home and improve educational outcomes for at-risk students.
