Cox Enterprises partnered with Province Inc. in 2018 to form Atlanta Esports Ventures, which owns and operates the Atlanta Reign, a team in the Overwatch League. Cox also invested in a new Call of Duty League that will kick off its inaugural season in 2020. Both Overwatch League and Call of Duty League have global reach, with city-based teams located across Asia, Europe and North America. Esports is on track for rapid and exponential growth, and is expected to draw more viewers than every professional sports league but the NFL by 2021.

Atlanta Reign

The Atlanta Reign, a franchise team in the Overwatch League, is Cox’s first foray into the world of esports. The team has proven to be enormously popular in its first year, building an incredible fan base across the Southeast. The Overwatch League is the first global professional esports league with 20 city-based teams worldwide competing for a share of a prize pool that totaled $5 million in 2019. The league features organized competitions among professional players designed for spectator experiences. The matches are broadcast on ESPN and Disney XD and selectively on ABC.

Call of Duty is the world’s biggest video game franchises and one of the most recognizable entertainment properties in the world. The new league is growing rapidly, with new franchises for Los Angeles and Minnesota recently announced as the sixth and seventh confirmed franchises – joining New York, Toronto, Paris, Dallas and Atlanta. Combining the strength of the brand with the rich history of Call of Duty esports opens the door to a wealth of possibilities for the growing popularity of esports in Atlanta.

Paul Hamilton is president and CEO of Atlanta Esports Ventures, a joint venture owned by Cox Enterprises and Province Inc., dedicated to bringing the best of esports to the city of Atlanta. Paul oversees the development of the Atlanta Reign and Call of Duty team franchises. Previously, he was a founding principal of Province Inc. and president and CEO of The Greenspun Corporation in Nevada. He has extensive experience growing and creating long-term value for businesses in the gaming, real estate, travel and tourism industries.

Eric Hamilton is the General Manager for the Atlanta Reign, one of 20 franchise teams in the global esports Overwatch League. His extensive knowledge of esports strengthens the vision of the Atlanta Reign where he oversees operations and supports the growth of the team. Eric has noteworthy experience working with traditional sports and coaches, allowing for unique versatility in the organization.
