The “2018 Cox Automotive Evolution of Mobility” study
08/30/2018
With mobility services as a primary focus area, Cox Automotive continues to study the trends in alternatives to vehicle ownership, autonomous vehicles and other automotive technology. It recently released the “2018 Cox Automotive Evolution of Mobility” study.
This multi-part study is focused on how consumers and dealers are thinking about the changing mobility landscape.
The first part of the study narrows in on autonomous vehicles. According to the study’s findings, consumer awareness of driverless vehicles has skyrocketed, and the desire for autonomous features is high. “As awareness around the development of autonomous technology increases, we’re seeing some dramatic shifts in consumer sentiment,” said Karl Brauer, executive publisher, Cox Automotive. “People now have a deeper understanding of the complexities involved when creating a self-driving car, and that has them reconsidering their comfort level when it comes to handing over control.”

The second part of the study addresses consumer acceptance of the many technology-driven mobility solutions that are beginning to supplement or replace traditional vehicle ownership, such as car-sharing, ride-hailing and subscription services. “Private ownership still dominates the automotive landscape, but options like ride-hailing and subscription programs are increasingly popular with young urban dwellers,” said Michelle Krebs, executive analyst for Autotrader. “The trendline for these programs could drastically alter this industry over the next five to 10 years.”
