Senior Vice President & General Counsel

Joiava Philpott is senior vice president and general counsel for Cox Enterprises, overseeing the legal matters for Cox Communications including regulatory and government affairs, Cox media, Cox business, commercial operations, broadband, voice and wireless, video, content acquisition and new growth and strategy.

Prior to joining Cox, Joiava served as general counsel of AstroTurf and earlier worked for Charter Communications as its corporate vice president and senior counsel of government affairs. She began her career with the City of Atlanta’s Law Department, advising on municipal rights-of-way, cable franchising and telecommunications law.

Joiava has served in various leadership, nonprofit board and volunteer roles with the Association of Corporate Counsel, the National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC), the WICT Network (Women in Cable Telecommunications), the Federal Communications Bar Association, the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential and YWCA of Greater Atlanta. She is a founding member of Sister2Sister, the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys’ teen mentoring program.

Joiava has been recognized as an In-House Counsel Woman of Color to Watch by Diversity & the Bar Magazine and amongst the Most Influential Minorities, the Most Powerful Women, and the 100 Top Power Players by Cablefax: The Magazine. She is the recipient of the Mae Douglas Mentoring Award and the Next Generation Leader Award from NAMIC. She has received the Distinguished Alumni award from American University’s Washington College of Law and is an alumna of the Leadership Atlanta Class of 2023.

Joiava received a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from Hampton University and her Juris Doctorate and Master of Business Administration from American University. Joiava has completed executive education programs at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, the University of Virginia, Darden School of Business and the Center for Creative Leadership.
